ANIMATION

Studio Ki’i’pili is an animation collective working on Māori Pasifika and multicultural boutique animation projects. We are a rotating roster of independent animators across Aotearoa and the Pacific mostly working from community work space Wheke Fortress in Onehunga. The name Studio Ki’ipili is a Pasifika remix of Studio Ghibli but alsoHawaiian for Adjoined/Moving (Ki’i) Image/Photo (Pili) ie. animation! We are working to diversify the animation climate locally by putting authentic indigenous narratives onscreen, by using collective creative processes and by ensuring cultural competency in our work (not just having people ‘interpret’ our stories and signifiers or bringing us on as scapegoat consultants when it’s too late). Story Sovereignty in Animation!
